So I FINALLY got my butt over to Rosa's. Well I should say it's the second time I've been there now but it's the first time I've actually eaten there. The first time that I went there it was on a Monday and Nick, our new reporter here at the Press, and I went there because he'd never been there either. Well after some intel from our esteemed colleague Eric Galvan, he told us that Plane Food closes at 8 p.m. It was already 7 p.m. by the time we left, or just a little after. So we raced down there and it was about 7:35-7:40 by the time we arrived and the place was closed. I was a little irritated because we could have gotten some carry out or something. Ehh, wrong. So I was on another trek around Calexico to find some other good Mexican food but all the establishment down there close at 8 p.m. What's up with that? That's pretty dumb, I think anyway. So we ended up going to Mexicali Taco here in EC. I guess an alright default, no complaints from me or my stomach.
So I traveled down there this past Monday and made it just in time to get some food. I got the chipotle shrimp quesadilla and the enchiladas, chicken to be exact. The shrimp were really good and I've never been accustomed to eating cheese and fish, or seafood for that matter. They usually don't go well together, I guess tuna melts might be the only exception. But chipotle and shrimp go well together and the cheese added a nice textural contrast to the chewy, sweet shrimp and the smokiness of the chipotle. It didn't blow me away but it was good for sure. The enchiladas, I will be honest, weren't good. But I have to say that I'm not a fan of them but I got them because I wanted to try something different than the carne asada plate like I get everywhere else. They might be good to others but I'm not going to get them anywhere ever again. I will though say that the salsa and the service were great. The prices were a little more than what I expected but for the amount of food I got it was pretty good.
The place was kind of hard to find and I was a little nervous because we were walking right out onto a landing strip but the food was good and I have to go back sometime soon because Nick got some shrimp in a creamy chipotle sauce and that was fantastic. I also have to go back and get a carne asada plate so I can compare it to others that I've had around the Valley. What else should I get down there? I'll eat just about anything so give me some ideas of what I should get the next.
