I thought this was fun considering the fair was in town. What you see above came from Mexicali, but it would certainly make for excellent fair fare. It Mexicali's version of the candied apple. Instead of tinted sweet syrup or caramel, this giant, juicy, green apple is coated in tamarind candy. The result is a sinful snack that is at once sweet and spicy, yet slightly salty with a fun sour bite.
You can buy these at candy stores in Mexicali. There is a little candy store district that is very near the border, which I like going to every few months (you don't have to go often since candy stores in Mexicali sell mostly in bulk). Even if you've never been, it's pretty easy to get to. Once you enter Mexicali through Calexico's "Old" Port of Entry, you stay right when the road forks. After four or five blocks (I checked on google maps -- it's five but in the dense traffic it would feel like four, I'm sure) you turn a sharp right and you'll see a street lined with brightly painted candy stores. The street is quite short and ends with the "Parque de los Mariachis," a small park that for years has been full of Mariachi groups that congregate at night, waiting to be hired for parties.
Or you could do what we did. When a friend brags that a lady delivers these treats to her office in El Centro every couple of weeks, demand that she buy you one.

that sounds much better than the caramel apples. Are these apples red or green? I like the green apples when they're gonna be coated with something. Although since tamarind is so sour maybe red apples would be better.

Sorry, but I like my apples straight up. Candied apples are the worst.

I don't discriminate, I love apples in all their forms. Pied, candied, straight up, anything.
The one I had was a green sour apple. It was perfect.

I went to Mexicali a few days ago and picked up a couple of fun tidbits regarding these candied apples.
First, they are massively popular. Each candy store I went to had one left in stock, if that.
At one of the stores that had sold out its supply of apples the manager told me, "Come back in two days, we'll have more in by then. They're very good. They're coated in tamarind that is sweetened with jamoncillo." I just assumed that the tamarind was sweetened with plain old sugar, but I like that instead they use jamoncillo (a candy that is made from sweet cream -- it usually takes the form of bars that are grainy in texture).
Finally, ma boy Miza gave me good news: I don't have to go to Mexicali to buy these candied apples anymore! "Antojitos", a good restaurant off 4th and Desert Gardens in El Centro, sells them too.

My favorite easter candy (and favorite candy, period) are called
hummingbird eggs. They are tiny little chewy bits of corn syrup and
come in a bunch of different colors.

Hi guys,
Nice article, Hallucination is generally a very bad thing, especially when small mystical creatures are involved. But Microsoft Research has published a paper today that makes hallucination a lot more interesting, and a lot more useful. Thanks

One of the major problems that has confronted American society over the last couple of decades in the hyper-partisan atmosphere that is fanned by the 24/7 media. Instead of focusing so much on our differences, we need to celebrate those things that we have in common. If we would only look, it would become very obvious that we have much more in common with most folks than we have differences.
