It's been awhile
It's been awhile since I played basketball. Back in the day we played ball religiously. Our social lives or lack thereof revolved around our weekend pickup games. Last night, for the first time in what seems like years, we played ball. Humberto, Rigo, Miza and myself hit up Jacques n Jill's last night to shoot some hoop.
We didn't play well, but we played. It was actually fun to go out and shoot some hoops. When we were younger we were too fixated on winning to actually enjoy the game. Have fun. Well, everyone except for Rigo, he never seemed to care wether we won or lost. Now that we're older I guess we have no choice but to enjoy the game, since we aren't good at it anymore. Hahaha. When we began playing last night, it took awhile for me to warm up. While I stunk up the game, someone stunk up the court. Literally. Whoever dropped that stink bomb in the key should go to a doctor. Seriously, get yourself checked out. As the game went on I started playing a little better, got my basketball legs back and made a couple of shots. If I was bad last night, Rigo was just plain awful. Get with it Big Man.
We're hoping to make this a weekly thing.

So which one of you wrote this one? At least give me a name so I can congratulate you for the anti-Rigo length of the post.

there. better?
Posted by: soulman | January 25, 2008 at 11:16 AM
Better. And please, we don't need any heart attacks on the court.

Yeah really, I think I was doing pretty good throughout but poor rigo, I really felt for the guy. Out of shape is an understatement, he was playing hard at the beginning and bless his soul continued to play even though it was obvious he couldn't do much more. I remember the old days where playing basketball was the best thing I did all week. I know I had fun back then but sadly it did revolve around winning.

Jbrad if you want to join us we'll probably be playing again next week on Thursday, time yet no known. Bring your Sports Editor.

Man, I ran out of gas quickly, but I had a few highlights! Like the sequence where I crashed the boards, spun away from one defender, juked a second (very atheletic) defender, and sank a sweet 10 footer. Later, that juked (very atheletic) defender took it to the hole against old Rigo, and much to his surprise I packed the hell out of him.
If I didn't have such an enormous belly I'm sure I could dunk. Don't laugh damn you. In like two weeks I'm gonna be sleek and sexy and unstoppabler (I'm already unstoppable). The transformation will be so sudden and beautiful that people are going to start calling me "Butterfly".
-- "Wassup, Butterfly!"
-- "Hey, baby what's shakin'. Not me. I'm so toned I could print 100 pages a minute."
-- "Hell yeah, Butterfly. Oh! '100 pages a minute' because a printer has toner. I get it. Hell yeah."

Man, nobody wants to see me on the hardwood. Frankly, I suck at b-ball. I can't shoot, defend, jump, look cool ... you name it. I will, however, watch and chime in with biting comments. James Arens can play, however. Get that guy out there. Mario? Maybe if it were a soccer game, but not hoops.
Posted by: JBrad | January 25, 2008 at 02:02 PM
I have an even better idea. How about a sports challenge? While I think we'd cream you guys in basketball, only because James is one hell of a basketball player and has great conditioning, I suggest we expand it to all sports. Baseball or softball, soccer, football, bowling maybe? even golf if you'd like. We can make it a weekly thing and even write some stories out of it, to get your humiliation in ink. What do you think?

I almost forgot, how about raquetball and tennis too?
Posted by: Mario Renteria, Sports Editor | January 25, 2008 at 02:24 PM
That sounds marvelous! And make no mistake, we would lose. Except I don't play soccer. That's not a real sport.
Posted by: Rodrigo | January 25, 2008 at 02:37 PM
Awwww. C'mon Rodrigo. I'm willing to play "your" sport, even though I suck at it, but yet you're not willing to play "my" sport. Remember, this is just about having fun, don't take yourself too seriously. Have a little fun every now and then Rodrigo. Loosen up man. I'll tell you what, I'll buy you a beer after the soccer game at B&B ... I've been craving a Guinness on tap.

give us a few weeks to get our conditioning and we'll tear you up. We'll be like Bo Jackson in that old Nike commercial. Playing all the sports.
Rodrigo Knows!!!
By the way, Rigo's sport is not basketball. It's consuming large quantities of food.

soccer's for mexicans

Yeee-ikes, Soulman, you are relentless today.
We can also play table tennis, hop-scotch, tag, tennis court football (a game Miza invented when we got tired of trying to play tennis), Wii sports, snowboarding, skiing, mud-wrestling, dancing, rocking (on GH3), and some other things.
Posted by: Rodrigo | January 25, 2008 at 03:34 PM
Rigo, i'm only lighting you up because I care.
Posted by: soulman | January 25, 2008 at 04:47 PM
I will play any sport except soccer, I can't stand the fact I can't use my hands.
Posted by: Humberto | January 25, 2008 at 07:09 PM
hmm, i think that coach we saw on the court was praying so that his team would not play like us.
and, if you wrote about 'playing' sports, does that go against your title 'from the stands'. i knew you guys should have used my suggestion- SNK.

Seriously, I'm in. It'll be like Pros vs. Joes (or Rodrigos)

Soccer would be perfect for Rigo. No hands!!!
Posted by: soulman | January 28, 2008 at 11:37 PM
Hop-scotch, tag? let's keep it simple, to real sports. Also, why the heck does Eric Galvan want it? He's not a part of the sports department. He's like that kid the is always picked last and nobody really wants on their team. In fact, you guys can have him ... it will probably benefit us more.

you apparently got three since Jbrad already said he's gonna be on the sidelines reading a book or what ever he does. We got our three, so thursday at 5:30 Jaques and Jills? Don't know what time you guys get off work, we can also push it back to 7:30 so miza can be there but you would need a fourth.

Isn't eric galvan the raider fan/movie critic?
