CALEXICO --- An attempt to smuggle packages of cocaine worth more than $300,000 across the border was foiled by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers here Thursday at the east Port of Entry, a news release said.
A silver 1999 Volkswagen Passat with Sonora license plates was at the secondary inspection site where an officer noticed that the driver was acting nervous, the release reported. Drug sniffing dogs alerted officers to 15 wrapped packages of cocaine hidden inside a custom-made compartment. The drugs weighed 40 pounds.
The driver, a 36-year-old Sonora resident, was arrested on suspicion of narcotic smuggling.
