BRAWLEY — Victims and witnesses of a shooting and stabbing that happened on consecutive days here over the weekend are not talking to police.
Brawley police say that the crimes were not motivated by thievery may be a sign of a violent surge in gang rivalry.
“It’s a concern. We got a shooting and stabbing and we are trying to figure out why,” Brawley police Sgt. Perry Monita said Monday.
The string of incidents began about 3:45 a.m. Saturday when a 24-year-old Brawley man was shot once in the abdomen at a duplex on the 1200 block of rom Oakley Elementary School.
East B Street — two blocks f
The victim, an alleged gang member, was transported to Pioneers Memorial Hospital and was reportedly in stable condition, Monita said.
The bullet and its casing were not recovered but police said they think a small-caliber handgun was used.
Around the same time of morning on Sunday, an 18-year-old Brawley man was stabbed in the 1200 block of Main Street, Monita said.
Two men in a car stopped and approached the victim walking on the street, stabbing him in the ribs, Monita said. The victim, also an alleged gang member, was transported to Pioneers but might have been referred to an outside hospital, Monita said. As of press time, his condition remained unknown.
“We don’t know if they are connected or gang-related. But the victims are local gang members,” Monita said.
Police have no suspects or motivations for both incidents. Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Brawley Police Department’s detective division at 344-2111.
