A motorist heading west on Highway 78 New Year's Eve inexpicably crossed over the opposite lane of traffic and kept driving for about two miles before colliding into another vehicle, sustaining fatal injuries, a California Highway Patrol Officer said in a press statement.
The 4:23 p.m. collision is under investigation but Highway Patrol Officer Humberto Gonzalez said that the Westminster resident behind the wheel of a 1996 GMC truck, who was later identified by a coroner official as Victoria Lynn Bauer, kept driving onto the eastbound dirt shoulder of the highway numerous times.
Bauer's vehicle smashed head-on into a 2007 Dodge pickup that was hauling a trailer east of Old Mine Road, Gonzalez said. The second vehicle that was heading east on Highway 78 tried slowing down and was steered to the dirt shoulder to avoid a collision.
