SALTON CITY --- Two senior Cochella residents died Wednesday at a Palm Springs hospital following a rollover crash off Highway 86, California Highway Patrol Officer Pablo Torrez said today.
The occupants of the 2007 Chevrolet vehicle that rolled over into the dirt median and across the highway died from their injuries after being flown out to Desert Regional Medical Center, Torrez said. The crash occurred north of Treadwell Road.
The driver, 65, was heading north on the highway at about 70 mph when he tried passing another motorist who was driving ahead of him, according to a press statement. Neither the name of the driver nor of the passenger who got ejected was released.
The driver lost control of his vehicle when he made an unsafe turning movement, causing him to roll over several times in the dirt median and across the opposite lanes of traffic, the statement read.
The impact ejected a 60-year-old passenger who sat in the rear of the 2007 Chevrolet vehicle and she, along with the driver, was flown out to the hospital. A 28-year-old passenger, also of Coachella, who sat beside the driver suffered injuries to his right arm, the press statement said. The 4:30 p.m. crash snarled traffic on the southbound lanes of Highway 86 for an unspecified length of time.
